Informative Facts Concerning Our Services

Do you have questions for Dr. Podhorodecki or our services that we offer?

Below is a list of some frequently asked questions, but please feel free to call our office at 212-529-5966 if you need additional information.  We are always pleased to assist you.

Why did my doctor refer me to you ?

A physiatrist is a doctor specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R).  This is a branch of medicine specifically dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of physical disabilities and the injuries of the nerves, muscles and joints. Through rehabilitation, function and independence is restored, helping you maintain your desired lifestyle.

What happens during the first consultation ?

The consultation will begin with you being asked a series of questions about your disability and how it affects your everyday functioning.  Your past illnesses, medications and allergies will be noted and previous medical records reviewed, if possible.  A physical examination will then evaluate your strength, coordination, reflexes and balance and may include observing you walking or rising from a chair.  Additional tests such as X-rays, EMG, MRI or blood tests may also be recommended to obtain additional data.

What kind of treatments can I expect ?

Once a diagnosis is determined, an individual therapy program will be prescribed for you.  This may include moist heat, ice, ultra-sound, electrical stimulation, massage  and exercise (with home instruction).  Medication or injections may also be prescribed.  If needed, a brace, splint or prosthesis will be organized (custom hand splints are made on site by our occupational therapist.

What if I am referred for an EMG?

An EMG (Electromyography)  is the electrical testing of your nerves and muscles. It helps diagnose conditions that cause pain, weakness and numbness. Brief electrical shocks are delivered to see how your nerves conduct and test whether a muscle is "sick or healthy".  EMG is very useful in diagnosing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Sciatica or Neuropathy.  Aside from slight discomfort, the test is benign.

How can I prepare for physical therapy ?

Since your therapy sessions may include a variety of treatment modalities, comfortable fitness apparel is recommended. However, if you arrive unprepared, gowns are available. The key to successful rehabilitation is: the more you put into your therapy and practice at home, the greater and faster the benefits.

Should I continue to see my regular doctor ?

Your primary doctor is in charge of your total general health needs and should be seen for all other health problems. We anticipate you will, after a course of rehabilitation return to your primary care doctor.

How can I pay for my treatment ?

We accept Medicare and many third party insurance, Worker's Compensation and No-Fault. We must collect deductibles and 20% coinsurance, according to Medicare law.  All billing is done by a billing service and in order to simplify claims, please sign insurance or Medicare forms.  We also participate with many health care plans  (click here for a list of insurances).  If you belong to an HMO, referrals from the primary doctor must be produced at the first visit. Failure to do will result in financial liability. Co-payments are also requested promptly at each office/therapy visit ( cash or checks, we do not accept credit cards).
